About the Fair Company Initiative
In 2004, the business newspaper Handelsblatt responded to the trend of the “internship generation” with the Fair Company Initiative. The focus was on young academics who, despite their good education, were unable to find permanent employment and were hired as interns, often without any remuneration. In order to create fair conditions for young professionals, Handelsblatt founded an association of companies that committed to fixed rules for a good start to professional life.
Demographic change, skills shortages and recruiting young talent are now the issues that concern the economy and businesses. In a strong labour market, companies have to compete for candidates just as much as candidates
have to compete for jobs. Fair, individual working conditions are still important, but so are questions such as: What is the corporate culture like? How does the company behave in the market? How committed is it to society and the environment?
That is why the initiative now considers fairness in many dimensions and is aimed at all career starters and young professionals. In cooperation with the Institute for Employment and Employability (IBE) in Ludwigshafen, Handelsblatt includes employers in the initiative who meet the expectations of Generation Y and Generation Z in a special way and offer fair, attractive working conditions.

Examination and methodology

Handelsblatt recognises companies that meet the expectations and values of career starters and young professionals in a special way as Fair Companies. The Institute for Employment and Employability (IBE) conducts its assessment using a specially developed questionnaire based on comprehensive analyses of fairness. Criteria such as work organisation, cooperation and leadership, corporate culture and values, commitment to employees, diversity and equal opportunities, fair market conduct, social responsibility and sustainability are evaluated.
